Bio: Kathleen, an environmental engineer and sustainability educator for over thirty years (from Alabama to New England to Micronesia to Oregon and back again to the Southeast), fell into advocacy and community organizing by necessity to support her vision of sustainable rural communities in the South. Frustrated by the lack of affordable resources and networks for down-ballot candidates in red states, she dove headlong into political work in recent years to learn the ropes and help local Progressive leaders run successful campaigns.

Kathleen enjoys applying design thinking and biomimicry principles to achieve practical, people-centered, placed-based solutions. She is currently the Strategic Initiatives Organizer for Hometown Action (a statewide group focusing on rural organizing), an elected member of the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee, and a founding board member of Emerge Alabama.

Advice: Forget any pre-conceived notions about what it takes to be a “good candidate”.
